Landscape Paintings For Sale > Lily Pad Gallery West is presenting the exhibition “Fields of Vision: The Landscapes of Diane Washa and Peter Batchelder.” It highlights two distinct yet complementary approaches to landscape painting, generating an aesthetic conversation between representation and abstraction, between serenity and vibrancy.

Having studied fine art at Wisconsin’s Milton College and then business administration at the University of Wisconsin — Whitewater, Diane Washa has become well known for her paintings’ prioritization of mood and atmosphere, both mysterious and familiar. Using a range of softer colors, her ethereal images float between reality and memory, often showing how elements of water, sky, and land can merge in harmony.

Diane Washa (b. 1953), “Beyond,” 2024, oil on canvas, 30 x 30 in.

By contrast, Peter Batchelder creates boldly colored scenes of rural scenery and architecture that features strong lines and highly defined forms. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts — Amherst, he lives in rural New Hampshire and is fascinated by the geometric shapes of barns, farmhouses, and silos and how they interrelate with fields and other open spaces.

On view at American Legacy Fine Arts this season is “Jove Wang: Spirit of the American West,” an exhibition of more than 20 recent landscape and figure paintings.

Gallery director Elaine Adams calls it “a bridge between two worlds, illustrating how Jove Wang’s early life experiences in China have shaped his perception and artistic interpretation of his current life in the American West. Wang’s childhood in the vast, open steppes of Inner Mongolia instilled a deep appreciation for expansive landscapes and the rugged beauty of untamed nature. These formative years amid rolling plains, grazing livestock, and the tribal nomadic lifestyle (including the renowned horse culture) are mirrored in his dynamic compositions today.”

At age 7, Wang began an apprenticeship with the master painter Gang Gu, subsequently studying at the Jilin School of Art, Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, and Tokyo Academy of Fine Arts. In 1990, he immigrated to the U.S., where he has made it his goal that “each work I paint must be endowed with its own life and soul from within, whether it is a drama, an opera, a poem, or even a fantasy. I consider my style as realism combined with modern expressionism.”

In a world where art often appeals only to the eye, and not the emotions, artist Brittany Scott, a mother of six boys and the founder of the 501c3 non-profit Inspired Arts League, wants art to move people deeply. Her mission? Bring back emotion-based storytelling in art by debuting the work created by 13 artists at their Inaugural Art Exhibition at the NYC Salmagundi Club, October 14-25, 2024.

To Provide by Albin Veselka
“To Provide” by Albin Veselka

Over the past three years, Brittany dedicated herself to this vision, bringing in top experts to guide 13 artists in mastering emotion-based storytelling. In the first year, narrative-based training expert, Sarah Lagrotteria taught artists how to reverse-engineer emotions, crafting works that evoke deep feelings by stretching the tension in their story. The following year, Bill Perkins, former Director of Visual Development at Marvel, shared his expertise on the power of visual storytelling, as seen in Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

Now, after years of learning and collaboration, these artists have come together to create their own seminal works of art to embody what they’ve been working to learn. These transcendent works will be revealed at the Historic Salmagundi Club.

“It has been astounding to me to see how collectors are responding to it, and how these paintings created with intention are impacting their viewers. We really are bringing hope to the world through art and I’m just so humbled and grateful I get to be a part of it and witness it all unfold firsthand.”

Although the exhibition runs for two weeks, you can join the artists on October 16, 17 & 18, from 6-9 pm for three unprecedented artist receptions that are more than just an exhibit—they’re a journey into the future of representational fine art, where storytelling and emotion are at the core of every piece. Brittany’s vision is about reigniting the true purpose of art: to move, inspire, and transform the viewer.

Rodger Bechtold’s oil paintings are a spirited celebration of the Midwestern landscape, marked by their exuberant colors and expressive brushwork. Influenced by his studies at the American Academy of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his mentorship under renowned painter Wolf Kahn, Bechtold’s paintings balance realism and painterly interpretation.

The artist’s pieces evoke a sense of joy and vitality, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the beauty and tranquility of the Midwest. Through his expert use of color, light, and composition, Bechtold creates scenes that resonate with warmth and emotion, offering glimpses into the heart of the landscapes he portrays.

Each painting is a testament to Swaydan Grebel’s ability to capture the ephemeral, offering viewers a momentary glimpse into calm, domestic spaces.

More from the organizers:

Gallery 1261 began as a lofty notion: give artists a space to show the work they made for themselves. “Artists need to experiment and make work for themselves,” Quang Ho says, when asked about the origins of Gallery 1261. “The principal thought was to create a premier gallery where the artists would produce works that were not exclusively motivated by sales. We would allow the art to flow from a deep dive into its source, to break through the usual gallery marketing parameters.”

Scott Fraser, "Sonatina," oil on board, 15 x 12 in.
Scott Fraser, “Sonatina,” oil on board, 15 x 12 in.

David Uhl, Quang’s partner in Gallery 1261, recalls, “Quang and I were having lunch at the Denver Art Museum and started dreaming up the ideal art gallery.” Uhl happened to own a building just three blocks west of the Art Museum, an old machine shop with high arched wooden ceiling, steel trusses and sky lights that he had converted into his private design studio and bachelor pad. But he had moved his studio to the foothills, so the building was not being used. Now all they needed was a gallery manager.

“It was all David’s idea,” Christine Mileham says, reflecting back on the early conversations with Ho and Uhl about running the gallery. She had a successful gallery already, Abend, a family business, but she says she loved the idea. At first, she managed two locations but eventually brought Abend into the same Gallery 1261 space. “I’ve had a great partnership with the guys,” she says about the strengths each person brings to the table. “I think David put together the perfect trio.”

It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though. “Launching the gallery,” Uhl says, “I remember the gallery having a difficult time making enough to pay the rent; good thing I owned the building. It always looked beautiful for sure. In hindsight, it’s difficult prospect to launch a gallery based on artists creating work that’s technically not created to sell. It worked but took two decades!”

The gallery can also boast their ability to bring meld established artists with up-and-coming artists. Robin Cole, who started with 1261 in 2014, recalls, “It’s been a great honor to work with a gallery that represents so many of my heroes. I realize it’s a rare privilege to receive support for your creativity no matter how the spirit moves you—Gallery 1261 stands behind authentic creative endeavor and that is incredibly special.”

For Ron Hicks, who was there at the beginning, loved the comradery. “I was drawn to, and truly connected with Gallery 1261’s original concept of exhibiting works from artist that were experimental or were painted as if no one is looking over your shoulder,” he says. “Imagine… what would you create if left to your own devices, being free, without any external influences?”

And Daniel Sprick adds, “It has been a smooth and easygoing relationship, very productive for me and it only gets better throughout the years. Often times art galleries will steer artists towards some specific niche, or to something commercially viable. But at Gallery 1261 I’ve only seen the encouragement of authentic self-expression.”

On view at Hirschl & Adler Galleries this season is “The Art of Trains,” an exhibition of highlights from the collection of Peter and Christine Mosse.

As a teen growing up in England, Peter became enthralled by steam locomotives and started collecting railroad documents and equipment. After moving to New York in 1977, he turned his attention to fine art that depicts anything to do with railroads.

Today the collection encompasses approximately 250 paintings, watercolors, and drawings made in Britain, North America, France, Russia, Haiti, and China.

Last year the Mosses promised the entire collection to the Center for Railroad Photography & Art in Madison, Wisconsin, where Peter serves on the board. In celebration of this generous gift, Hirschl & Adler has selected 22 representative works, which now comprise the first exhibition of railroad art in New York City in over 50 years, and very likely the first showing of such pieces from a single private collection.

A sunlit summer studio and the brilliant colors of summer flowers with peaches are unique, colorful works that perfectly capture the essence of the season. “The lure of light, the atmospheric effect drawing the artists to a particular place result in paintings that feel peaceful and beautiful,” says gallery owner Susan Powell.

Timothy Rees on “Evening Mosey,” shown above:

“I am captivated by the many facets of humanity, and none more so than that of childhood; the transition from a creature barely aware into one of discovery, teetering on the cusp of growing up. I strive to illuminate these moments to viewers, often raw and untempered by fear of judgments, that we all once shared. In the case of ‘Evening Mosey’, it is my son – out for an evening stroll at the beach. The whole world was his. It’s a moment marked by his confidence and playfulness, and heightened by the drama of the setting sun. While the sun has set on that moment, the painting remains, a reminder to hold onto those most admirable qualities of our youth; those that may slip from us as time marches us forward into adulthood.”
